Scavenger Hunt Update Coming Soon

We viewed and voted on the results of the Spring Scavenger Hunt at tonight's camera club meeting. We will be posting the first, second and third place entries in all categories except duh and intimate. Due to a low number of entries in those categories we will only present the first place position. We hope to finish this entry by tomorrow evening.

A complete list of entries and photographers will be posted a day or two after that.

Thanks for participating in a great evening. We hope everyone enjoyed the new presentation format. We are always open to suggestions. Yes we will attempt to make the ballot printing larger next time!

Most of all thanks to everyone who participated in the hunt. We hope you had as much fun taking the pictures as we had putting the program together and seeing the pictures. My sincere apologies to Bob White who had two pictures I managed to turn wrong. But in the end even that turned out OK.

  2. Underneath
  3. 3 (as in the number three)
  4. Wired
  5. Intimate
  6. Duh...**

If you have questions please email us or leave them as a comment to this blog entry and we will get back to you promptly.

Get out and take those pictures using the rules below as guidelines. Remember the reason for this is to have fun and stretch yourselves as photographers! We look forward to seeing your entries.

On a personal note we will not be able to attend the March 26th meeting so if you bring your entries that night please give them to Ron Thornton our club secretary. He has graciously offered to collect them for us.

Scavenger Hunt Rules for the 2009 Season

Scavenger Hunt Rules

Scavenger Hunts will be held twice a year.

Six topics, determined by the Scavenger Hunt Chairperson(s), will be presented at the February and August fourth Thursday meetings. Members may enter one image in up to four of those topics. These photographs must be taken after the categories are announced.

One or two of the topics during each scavenger hunt may be designated Anything Goes and the use of Photoshop or other editing software may be used without limits (it is recommended that you also submit the original picture so we can show it for comparison). On the remaining topics editing software may be used only for sensor-dust removal or for global edits such as cropping, contrast, brightness and exposure.

The entries should be turned in on a CD or by e-mail to the Scavenger Hunt Chairperson(s) no later than the March and September fourth Thursday meetings. Submissions will not be accepted after this time.

If you do not have a digital camera you can have your photos scanned and put on a CD or we can arrange to have them scanned for you.

Competitor’s entries will be shown during the April and October fourth Thursday club meetings.

Comments will be given verbally by the members present at those meetings. We hope to encourage constructive comments aimed toward helping each photographer grow.

Ballots will be given to members present at those meetings to vote on their favorite entry in each category. These ballots will be tabulated during the meeting and the results (first, second and third places) will be announced. In addition, results will be posted on the Scavenger Hunt Blog and in the next edition of the Photogram.

It is hoped the Scavenger Hunt will be an event that allows you to get out of the box as a photographer and enable each person in the meeting to learn new ideas and techniques they can take home with them. It should also allow you to take a risk as a photographer and get valuable feedback on your work.

GUIDELINES FOR SAVING IMAGES TO E-MAIL OR CD FOR POWERPOINT PRESENTATION

To save your images for proper display on the projector, please follow these steps:

In Photoshop, go to "Image Size"
Uncheck the "Resample Image" box (optional)
Set the ppi to 96 (optional)
Recheck the Resample Image box
Set the Pixel Dimensions of the largest side to 1024 pixels.
Click OK.
On the Toolbar, select “Edit> Convert to Profile…”, and set the color profile to the sRGB profile (probably sRGB IEC61966-2.1). (NOTE: Skip this step if your image is already set on sRGB.)
Finally, save the image as a jpeg with a quality setting of 12.

No points will be given toward the photographer of the year competition.

MACRO - NO BUGS, WATER, FLOWERS Category Winners

1st Place - Melissa Odom

1) Disco colors go well with this photo. Dark shadow on right detracts from photo.
2) Creative lighting adds a lot of interest. Nice focus.
3) Dynamic image with strong color and eye catching highlights

2nd Place - Rita Szabo

1) Very well done.
2) Love the lines. My eyes follow the patterns to the smallest circle—almost
hypnotic. Great focus. Being in black & white increases the impact.
3) Might be improved if the upper portion was more in shadow. As is, the
lightest dark area is competition with the center circle for attention.
3rd Place - Lori Decker

1) Good use of macro. Find myself asking the inevitable “what is it?”question.
Missing the lower section of foreground detracts from photo. A little too bright
on top.
2) Love the colors and texture.
3) Colors don't seem to harmonize.

MOVIE TITLE Category Winners

1st Place - TRUE GRIT - Paul Huntington

1) Good choice to represent title.
2) There is a lot to explore in this photo. Nice lines made by the hills and
fences
3) Great representation of the movie title

2nd Place - SUMMER STORM - Corinne Merritt

1) Very good calendar pastoral photo. The sky could be cropped some on
the top to enhance the darker stormy sky.
2) I would like to see more detail in the clouds. The shot would have more
impact if the house and tree were not so centered horizontally.
3) Beautiful shot.

OBSOLETE Category Winners

1st Place - Melissa Odom

1) love this picture. The lighting is magical and moody
2) Great composition.
3) Professional looking image
2nd Place - Rita Szabo

1) Good use of focal length and f-stop. Lots of detail.
2) Works well as black & white. The train stands out nicely from the
background.
3) Infrared effect works well with this image

3rd Place - Gerry Toler

1) Very well lit. It looks like an ad in a magazine.
2) Good focus. Perhaps it would be more interesting if it were not centered.
3) NO COMMENTS

PERFECTLY CENTER Category Winners

1st Place - Lori Decker

1) Another center within a center. I like the special effects that make the
plant appear to be floating on oil. A little blurry toward the upper left, but very
good detail overall. It makes me itch.
2) Simple yet effective. I like the fuzziness of the leaves. Very peaceful.
3) Good idea, but it needs something more, maybe more saturated color.
Highlight at bottom takes eye away from center.

2nd Place - Joe Jensen

1) It looks cool, but I’ve got no idea what it is. A flower would be my guess.
Those look like stamens in the center, but there’s a lack of detail.
It’s also burned out at the edges. It probably would’ve been better to crop
closer. Hope it sounds good, because I really have no idea what I’m talking
about on this one. A good try overall.
2)Nice abstract. I’m not sure what this is, but it draws me to the center. It
might be a little overexposed on the right side.
3) Loss of detail in the shapes in the center - solid blacks - distracts from image

3rd Place - Melissa Odom

1)White petals appear washed out. Pretty flower picture, but too common.
2) Nice subject. The flower stands out nicely against the dark background.
3) Good image, but the idea of "perfectly" centered sets a high standard for
category, to me the uneven petal curls aren't perfect

PHOBIA Category Winners

1st Place - Rita Szabo
1) Yeah, I can see this creepy fellow giving someone delightful nightmares.
Love the lighting. Good job!
2) Black background works well. I was immediately drawn to front clown,
but I spent quite a bit of time looking at all the other clowns. Good idea, well
done.
3) I’m a sucker for a freaky clown picture every time.

2nd Place - Gerry Toler

1) Makes the viewer feel the fear of the unknown, the spectral, the mysterious, the supernatural. Good shot, like a poster for a scary movie
2) Has a nightmare quality.
3) A bit too dark. Light color gravel distracts from headstones
